Read MPP project records and export a review workbook or Gantt PDF
Make an existing project plan readable for a reviewer who needs its records and dates. Keep unsupported data visible in the omission report instead of silently treating a file preview as a recalculated schedule.

The example has a summary, four child tasks, two resources, an undated follow-up and two baseline slots. Try actual vs scheduled comparison and inspect the resulting downloads.
Supported scope: One file up to 12 MiB; 20,000 tasks, 50,000 dependencies/assignments, 10,000 resources, 48 MiB combined outputs. Unencrypted MPP14 (Project 2010-era and later; field coverage varies) or UTF-8 MSPDI XML only. Older/password-protected MPP, MPX, Primavera, scheduling/recalculation, full MPP round-trip, rich notes, timephased work and split intervals are not supported. MPP calendars: name/UID inventory only; XML calendar rule trees are retained without recurrence calculation. PDF: at most 500 filtered tasks. Local worker timeout 60 seconds. XML nesting: 32 levels.

Does this really read MPP files in the browser?
Yes. Supported unencrypted MPP14 containers are parsed locally with the pinned mppwriter engine plus bounded stored-field readers. Task records, stored dates, durations, dependencies, assignments, resource references and baseline values are extracted. The release was checked against real MPP14 fixtures and MPXJ. It does not claim every field or every Microsoft Project version is supported.
Can I edit the schedule or save another MPP?
This is a read-and-export workbench. Filtering and baseline selection change the review output, not the project schedule. It exports XLSX, CSV, JSON and a passive Gantt PDF. It does not write MPP, reschedule dependencies, calculate critical path or reproduce the source application’s complete views.
Why does a date difference include weekends?
The comparison measures elapsed wall-clock minutes between stored dates with matching timezone qualifiers. It does not run the project’s working calendar, holidays or resource calendars. A scheduled finish difference is distinct from an actual finish difference; a missing actual finish remains unknown.
What is omitted from a conversion?
The profile omits notes/rich text, costs/rates, custom and enterprise fields, timephased work, split-task intervals, embedded objects, external project contents and source views. MPP calendar names/UIDs are listed but working rules are not decoded. Project XML calendar rule trees are retained as reference data. Every download set includes omission notes; it is not a lossless project backup.
Are names, dates and WBS values preserved in Excel?
The workbook stores cells as text so WBS prefixes, date strings and names are not converted into formulas or changed by Excel’s automatic typing. Native WBS and derived outline are separate columns. If a cell exceeds Excel’s 32,767-character limit, XLSX is omitted with a notice while full data remains in JSON/CSV.
Why can a name look different in the PDF?
The Gantt PDF uses a self-hosted embedded font. Long labels are visibly abbreviated to fit, and unsupported glyphs are replaced with explicit Unicode labels in the PDF only. Full original names remain in the data exports. The report records these display changes so a compact chart is not mistaken for the complete source text.
Sources & assumptions
Formats, algorithms and supported features are documented below. Check the stated scope and inspect your output before using it.
- Microsoft: Project XML data structure ↗
Stored task fields, actual dates, baseline records and predecessor links.
- Microsoft: PredecessorLink ↗
Dependency types and LinkLag in tenths of a minute.
- Microsoft: calendar XML structure ↗
Calendar references, working weeks and exceptions are distinct from stored task dates.
- mppwriter: browser-capable MPP14 reader ↗
Pinned MIT engine 0.4.3; limited stored-field profile independently checked with genuine MPP fixtures.
- MPXJ: independent MPP reader ↗
Independent test oracle for extracted task dates, durations, links and baselines; not the production browser engine.
- Microsoft: Compound File Binary format ↗
Allocation-chain and directory bounds checked before MPP decoding.
